Care for teeth and gums

Dental exams check your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues. Routine cleanings remove buildup around and between teeth.

Whether you’re due for a checkup or returning after time away, you’re welcome here. We care for patients of all ages.

Choosing your cleaning

Routine cleanings are generally for patients without gum disease. Your X-rays, gum measurements, and health history guide our recommendation.

Treating gum disease

If you have gum disease, we may recommend scaling and root planing (SRP) to remove buildup from tooth roots.

Ongoing gum care

After SRP, we generally recommend periodontal maintenance every three to four months to help control gum disease. If severe disease needs more care, we may refer you to a periodontist (gum specialist).

What to Expect

Your exam guides your care. Here’s what a routine visit may include.

  1. Prepare for your visit

    Bring your insurance card, and share any concerns, health conditions, or medications. See our new-patient guide and office hours and directions to plan ahead.

  2. Examine your teeth and mouth

    The exam may include checking tissues inside and outside your mouth, screening for oral cancer, and examining teeth for decay and other signs of disease. We may also feel and assess your jaw joints (temporomandibular joints, or TMJs).

  3. Review X-rays and gum health

    Your hygienist and doctor review X-rays when due, generally yearly, and check bone levels. We compare gum-pocket measurements, usually recorded yearly, to look for changes.

  4. Clean your teeth, when appropriate

    Routine cleaning may include ultrasonic scaling followed by hand scaling to remove buildup, then polishing, flossing, and fluoride varnish. If you need periodontal treatment, we’ll explain the next steps.

  5. Plan your next visit

    We’ll review the findings together and recommend when to return, based on your oral health and home care.

A standard new-patient visit is around 90 minutes.
