What Are the Benefits of Dental Bonding?

Bonding is an effective way to apply minor touch-ups to a smile. When patients have had a fall, a sports-related accident, or a knock to the teeth, they may have a small chip or crack. Instead of having the entire tooth replaced, or having to undergo surgery, we can use bonding to treat the injury. With this treatment, the patient does not need surgery. The patient won't have to suffer through aftercare. and the patient's smile will be aesthetically pleasing.

Bonding can also be used to make teeth look bigger and longer, as well as to close gaps in between teeth. When patients have only have one gap between two teeth that they would like reduced, bonding is an alternative treatment that can resolve this issue as opposed to braces or aligners. A similar alternative to bonding is veneers, which are thin shells made of porcelain that are placed on the front of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance. Veneers are more expensive, and they require the permanent alteration of the teeth's enamel. Bonding does not require any changes to the enamel of the teeth on which it is placed.

How Is Dental Bonding Applied?

Bonding treatment begins with a consultation appointment in which our team assesses the viability of the procedure. Most people can have bonding; the issue is whether bonding is the right treatment for the patient's issue. Many people have more bonding on their teeth than they originally intended, as they realize the fantastic capability of the treatment. The color of the bonding will also be decided during the consultation appointment. Most people get it to be the color of their natural teeth, but patients can have bonding in conjunction with teeth whitening and may want it a few shades lighter.

During the appointment, the dentist will roughen the enamel of the tooth to make it more susceptible to the bonding resin. A special liquid is also applied to the tooth, to act as an adhesive between the tooth and bonding resin. The resin is then placed on the desired area of the enamel, and the dentist will begin to mold it into the correct shape. One of the benefits to bonding is that it can give the patient nicely rounded teeth, and our dentists will work carefully to achieve this.
