Many individuals will neglect receiving proper alignment treatment for their teeth because they dislike the wires and brackets that are used with traditional braces. However, in recent years, clear aligners have emerged as a very popular form of oral appliance that allows the patient to receive alignment treatment without anyone knowing they are using oral corrective devices. How Does Invisalign Work?
Despite not using the traditional wires and brackets that normal braces use, Invisalign aligners work in a very similar way to all other alignment appliances. Invisalign aligners exert constant pressure on the patient's teeth throughout the day to encourage their movement into the desired positions. While traditional braces are adjusted in order to allow for continuous pressure on the teeth, Invisalign aligners are made of one solid mold of plastic and are replaced every 2 weeks, which ensures pressure is sustained. The consultation appointment is the cornerstone to the treatment, as the patient will learn everything they need to know about Invisalign aligners there.
Once our dentist has taken some imaging of the patient’s oral cavity, our team will be able to show the patient how their teeth should look at the end of the treatment plan, and how long it should take to achieve this. Typically, treatment takes 12 to 18 months, and this varies depending on the initial positioning of the patient’s teeth. The dentist will then send the measurements of the patient’s teeth off to the dental lab, and there they will create the first sets of Invisalign aligners.
Our dentist will give the patient a few sets at a time, and the patient will wear each set for two weeks, and have appointments with us every 3 to 4 months. Most patients wear between 12 to 48 sets of Invisalign aligners throughout their treatment plan. We will also inform the patient how they should be wearing the Invisalign aligners. The aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day, with the user only taking them out for eating and drinking.

Traditional braces users cannot eat hard foods, which is not an issue for Invisalign users.
